Swimming Lessons
At Shardlow Hall Day Nursery, we provide our preschool children with the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at a nearby leisure centre. This is a great way for children to learn an essential skill that will support them as they get older. Water safety is such an important lesson so we're very proud to be able to support our children with this here at nursery.
Why Swimming Is So Important?
We believe that swimming is not just a fun activity, it’s a vital life skill. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to offer swimming classes for our preschool children at the local leisure centre.
Safety First:
Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children. By introducing swimming early, children become more confident and capable around water. Learning basic water safety skills can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and help children respond calmly and safely in aquatic environments.
Physical and Cognitive Development:
Swimming supports the development of motor skills, coordination and muscle strength. Beyond the physical benefits, swimming can boost confidence, improve focus and even enhance memory and learning through structured instruction and repetition.
Building Confidence and Independence:
For many children, swimming lessons are their first experience learning a new skill outside a nursery/school setting. It’s a wonderful opportunity to foster independence, resilience and a sense of accomplishment as they progress through each stage.
Social Skills and Fun:
Group swimming classes also provide a chance for social interaction. Children learn to listen, take turns and support their peers, all in a playful and supportive environment. The joy and excitement of water play also make swimming a highlight of the week!
Why the Local Leisure Centre?
We’ve partnered with our local leisure centre because it offers a safe, professionally maintained environment with qualified swim instructors. The facilities are well-equipped to support young learners and the proximity to our nursery makes it easy for us to include swimming as a regular part of our weekly routine. By offering these classes, we’re not only teaching a crucial life skill, we’re giving our children the chance to grow, play and thrive in the water.
